ECONET Wireless is changing the first three digits of its network starting October 2 in a forced move, a spokesman said.

Econet numbers which all currently begin with the prefix 091 will use 077 instead.

“This is in line with global regulations set by the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union,” Econet spokesman Rangarirai Mberi said.

The change-over, the company said, will take place at midnight on October 2. Callers using the 091 prefix will however continue to be connected, although that will finally terminate exactly a month later on November 2.

Econet has an estimated four million subscribers in Zimbabwe, trailed by Telecel which is approaching a million.

NetOne, which has just over 600,000 subscribers, was the first to announce a change in May when it dropped the 011 prefix and replaced it with 071+2+number.
