Zimbabwe Withdraws Appeal on Claim to Marange Diamond Fields

Tue, Sep 21, 2010

Zimbabwe's Ministry of Mines has withdrawn its appeal against a September 9 court ruling that upheld the claim by the African Consolidated Resources (ACR) mining company to the country's Marange diamond fields, the company announced.

The decision was handed down by Zimbabwe's High Court on September 7, 2010, based on the judge's finding that ACR's original claim had been made "fraudulently and with intent to mislead."

ACR denied and denies any impropriety in its claim to the Marange fields and promptly filed a counter-appeal.

The withdrawal of the government's appeal and ACR's move to lodge a counter-appeal have resulted in ACR's original claim, upheld in a ruling from September 2009, remaining in effect until the issue is fully resolved.

A diamond industry expert said in a recent visit to Zimbabwe that the country could become the world's top diamond producer by 2013, eclipsing Russia and South Africa.
