A court in Zimbabwe has brought five Russian tourists to justice by fining and planning to deport them for illegal gold mining in West Nicholson of the Matabeleland South province

The five Russians, Volynkin Vladilir, Safonor Alexander, Vorob Vev, Valerity Kharitonov and Shokolov Ivor, were arrested last week at a new mining site, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Gwanda magistrate Douglas Zvenyika imposed $200 fine for each of the tourists on charges of abusing their tourist visas and illegal exploration of minerals.

According to police officials, the five entered the country on tourist visas issued in Moscow by the Zimbabwean embassy. However, upon their arrival they engaged in illegal mining activities.

Zimbabwe authorities announced the five will remain in detention until immigration authorities deport them to Russia.

Illegal gold mining is widespread in the southern province of poverty-stricken Zimbabwe.
