Zim murder suspect commits suicide in police cells
FRANCISTOWN:A 42-year-old man from Zimbabwe committed suicide at Tatitown Police Station’s detention cells in Francistown on Friday, police have confirmed.
Acting Tatitown Police Station Commander, Assistant Superintendent Seakolong Nkau said that the man had been arrested last Monday in connection with the murder case at Mokubilo village – 100km west of Francistown – that allegedly took place on September 22, 2010.
The man allegedly killed a 30-year-old Motswana male at Mokubilo village – some 180km northeast from Francistown - following a heated argument over a pint of opaque beer commonly known as chibuku at a certain drinking spot in the community.
It is said that the Zimbabwean man used clenched fists, booted feet and knobkerries when beating the local man as punishment for drinking his opaque beer without first seeking permission from him.
The Zimbabwean is reliably informed that the man from Mokubilo village lost consciousness and was rushed to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital to seek medical services.
He was admitted at the referral hospital where succumbed to the body and head injuries he sustained during the incident five days later.
And on Friday, the murder suspect was found by the police hanging from the window of detention cell during a lunch-hour inspection around 2pm.
“It is true that a detainee we had in one of our cells committed suicide by hanging himself on Friday afternoon. He used a blanket seam to hang himself. The man was rushed to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival,” confirmed Ass Supt Nkau, adding that the deceased murder suspect tore a blanket and used its seam to hang himself since it is strong.
Ass Supt Nkau added that the police are not suspecting any foul play in the incident since the murder suspect was alone in the detention cells.
Names of the two deceased persons are still withheld by the police until their next of kin are informed about the incidents.
“The police are still tracing the relatives to the Motswana man. It is only believed that the man comes from Mokubilo but where exactly is the question. For the one who committed suicide, the police are still looking for his relatives. The man is of a Zimbabwean origin and said to have been surviving through manual jobs at Mokubilo village,” she said.
This is not the first time a detainee commits suicide in a detention at Tatitown station after the same incident once happened in 2008.
