EU concerned over Bennett case

By Staff reporter and agencies   Fri, Oct 16, 2009

Stockholm - The European Union says it is "deeply concerned" over the jailing of a prominent aide to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe, calling for the country to end politically motivated persecution.

Roy Bennett, nominated by Tsvangirai as deputy agriculture minister in the coalition government, was sent to jail on Wednesday on charges linked to discredited allegations of a plot against President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

Tsvangirai has said the case threatens the coalition he joined with Mugabe.

Bennett denies weapons violation.

In Thursday's statement, the 27-member bloc says it regrets "that politically motivated abuse persists in the country".

The EU says the case, along with other unsubstantiated legal actions in recent months, are a cause for serious concern.
