World Bank gives US$7m to Zim farmers
Harare, Zimbabwe - The World Bank Friday announced it would give US$7 million to small scall farmers in Zimbabwe to buy farming inputs to ensure food security in the country.
It said more than 300,000 farmers, mostly in the countryside, would be helped with seed and fertilisers in the forthcoming farming season.
The assistance is the latest in a series that international donors have given to Zimbabwe's farmers this year to boost food production.
The African Export-Import Bank and bilateral donors, among others, have announced funding for up to US$200 million for Zimbabwean farmers this year.
The country has in recent years been plagued by food shortages due to a fall in production, after the government seized white-owned farms to resettle landless blacks.
The World Bank said it would give the assistance in partnership with an Australian aid agency.
