Power generation at Kariba Hydropower Station will be slashed from 750 megawatts to 500 megawatts starting today, the Harare-based Herald said on its Web site. The reduction in output will require controlled power-cuts nationwide, it added.
Zimbabwe’s Hwange Thermal Power Station is producing 350 megawatts of power which may be increased to 480 megawatts, Gwasira told the Herald. The plant had a capacity to produce 920 megawatts, though coal shortages and ageing machinery have reduced that over the last decade.
Zimbabwe imports about 40 percent of its power needs from Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
