POLICE in Manchester, England, have launched a murder probe after a Zimbabwean man died on Wednesday following a violent assault by a gang of men last Saturday.

Zimbabwean dies after UK street attack

Mbongeni Ndlovu, 28, from Oldham, suffered internal head injuries after the savage street attack.

He was rushed to the Royal Oldham Hospital but was discharged shortly after and sent home with pain killing tablets, according to friends.

An ambulance was called hours later after he collapsed at home and he was rushed back to the same hospital, before being transferred to the Salford Hope Hospital which specialises in trauma and neurosciences.

Doctors battled to save his life before he lost his fight on Wednesday.

Last night, friends were remembering the popular star of their local social football team they knew simply as Mbo.

Elvis Mpofu, who played football with him, said: “It’s heartbreaking when you think of the violent nature of his death. He didn’t deserve this, he was a super guy who loved his friends and a bit of fun like all of us.”

Ndlovu, who arrived in Britain 10 years ago, had no relatives in England and his friends have been liaising with detectives.

Mpofu said: “Hospital staff were desperate to find his next of kin until a Zimbabwean nurse walked into the intensive care unit after being told by staff that a Zimbabwean was admitted there.

“She was overcome with emotion after discovering it was Mbo, someone she knew very well. Now we are all desperate for answers to know what happened to him.”

Greater Manchester police say two men have been arrested, and they are expected to make a further statement on Thursday
