Police defy orders
HARARE - Police last week defied orders by their superiors by turning up at a rowdy public meeting held by the MP for Chikomba to protect members of the public.
The police presence helped to restore the locals’ faith in the uniformed services. A police officer at the rally who asked not to be named said that his duty was to protect members of the public regardless of their political affiliation. “We were asked to come and protect the people who were afraid that the meeting would be disrupted and that is the reason why we are here. We are very professional in discharging our duties,” he said.
A few weeks ago Police Officer Commanding Mashonaland East Senior Assistant Commissioner Ronald Mderedzwa allegedly told officers at a secret meeting that was held at Karumazondo Lodge that the police should not open dockets of cases that are brought by MDC supporters.
“Police should not entertain criminal charges brought by MDC supporters victimised by Zanu (PF) or state security agents. No matter how grievously harmed MDC complainants would be it should not be an issue to the police. No police docket should be opened. Get this instruction right and disseminate it to junior police officers at all stations,” the officer was reported as saying.
