The agreement is a culmination of talks by government officials and Dubai diamond industry officials following an invitation made by the United Arab Emirates for Zimbabwe to set up offices in the Persian Gulf country.

Mines and Mining Development Minister, Obert Mpofu said he is satisfied with progress made so far in the deal and stressed that the invitation to set up offices in Dubai is a recognition that the country has become a force to reckon with in the global diamond industry.

Meanwhile, negotiations are in progress between the country and European Union officials for the setting up of another office at Antwerp Diamond Centre in Belgium following the invitation made the EU bloc.

The setting up of diamond offices in both Belgium and Dubai is expected to enhance the marketing of the country’s gemstones as well as promotion of the country’s mining industry in terms of investments.

On the decision by advocacy group, Global Witness, to withdraw from Kimberly Process, Mpofu said the move is a demonstration of the failure by the non-governmental organisation to keep Marange gems out of the international market.

The conclusion of the Marange diamonds issue by the Kimberley Process and authorisation of the unconditional sale of the country’s gems is a major boost to the country towards the realisation of sustainable economic growth.
