Zimbabwe denies detaining Gambian youths
The Zimbabwean Government has dismissed news reports that it had detained some Gambian youths in the Southern African country, the Freedom Newspaper can report. The rebuttal was contained in a terse letter sent to The Gambian President Yahya Jammeh by his Zimbabwean counterpart Robert Mugabe, who described such news reports as baseless and unfounded. The Zimbabwean Government said no Gambian youth had been detained in that country, and therefore reassures Banjul of its commitment to promoting cordial bilateral ties between the two nations.
The Zimbabwean Ministry of Youths and Sports clearly stated that they have no intentions to detain Gambian Youths. They said such a move would not yield any benefit for the Southern African country—and thus rejected the charges.
The Zimbabwean news release also challenged The Gambian authorities to visit Zimbabwe detention centers to verify the veracity of their claims—adding that Gambian officials are highly invited to visit the country to prove their curiosity.
The release finally stated that President Mugabe is therefore still assuring the Gambian President his continuous support and readiness to strengthen the cordial relationship with Banjul.
The release was received by the permanent secretary at the ministry of Youth.
It would be recalled that the detention of Gambian youths in Zimbabwe was reported by some international media houses in which the Zimbabwean Government denied vehemently.
