MTN on verge of deal with Zimbabwean mobile firm

South African telecommunications giant, MTN, is on the verge of acquiring a stake in Zimbabwe’s state-owned mobile operator NetOne, APA learnt here Thursday. Private radio station Radio VOP said NetOne and MTN signed a confidentiality deal this week, which means the South African firm was moving “closer to acquiring a key stake in the Zimbabwean company.” The radio station quoted senior MTN officials in Harare as saying the South African company had concluded a due diligence exercise on NetOne and was expected to place its final bid soon. Insiders said government would only offer MTN a small stake in NetOne and not the huge chunk they were seeking. NetOne is the second largest cellular telephone operator in Zimbabwe, while MTN is South Africa’s largest telecommunications company. In Zimbabwe, Econet Wireless Holdings Zimbabwe Limited (Econet) is the largest cellular telephone network operator with more than two million subscribers.
