Dozens of people were kicked out of their homes on Thursday after a massive raid in Braamfontein. Police closed down two illegal bus ranks in the Johannesburg city centre and raided several buildings, confiscating stolen goods and drugs. Police opened fire with rubber bullets after commuters started pelting them with stones. Several buildings were raided and at least seven people have been arrested for possession of stolen goods. The situation is now calm but many angry bystanders say police used unnecessary force.
The ranks are believed to be from where Zimbabweans leave for home. Police also opened fire with rubber bullets to control the crowd.
Dozens of Zimbabweans have also been left stranded after police closed down three illegal bus ranks. Bus operators said they had been transporting commuters to Zimbabwe from the station for years.
