A 42-year-old man raped a woman while her husband prayed outside their dwelling in Whitecliff.
Never Katiyo who is unemployed was convicted by a Harare magistrate and sentenced to eight years in prison with hard labour for the offence he committed on June 10 at the Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle housing project.

It was the state’s case that Katiyo broke into the complainant’s house while her husband was praying outside.

He grabbed the woman from behind and pushed her onto the floor and removed her underwear before raping her.

The woman screamed for help but when her husband came to her rescue,  Katiyo managed to escape naked.

The case was reported to the police and the complainant was taken to hospital for a medical examination.
The report was used as evidence in court.

Two years of his sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.

Aspiring teachers take college to court

GWERU — Some former students at Mkoba Teachers’ College (MTC) have taken the institution to court for withholding their diplomas over outstanding fees.

The aspiring teachers some of whom wrote their examinations in February have been denied access to their results.

MTC has withheld their diplomas arguing that they should pay fees with some having arrears amounting to thousands of US dollars.

The issue whose case number is 963/2010 will be heard at the Gweru magistrates courts with the college principal, Florence Dube cited as the first respondent.

The former students said they had pleaded with the principal to have their diplomas released so that they are able to work and repay the college.

“We do not mind the college making arrangements with Salary Service Bureau to take their money from our salaries until we finish off the school fees arrears.

“We are not refusing to pay, but we are incapacitated to pay and it does not make sense for the college to hold on to our diplomas.

“If we remain unemployed they will not be able to get any money from us,” said one of the aspiring teachers
