PM fires 4 MDC ministers

APA-Harare (Zimbabwe) Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on Wednesday reshuffled cabinet ministers from his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party in a move seen as the premier’s growing dissatisfaction over the performance of some of his colleagues serving in a coalition government with President Robert Mugabe.

The reshuffle saw at least three former ministers being booted out of the cabinet.

Those booted out included Energy and Power Development Minister Elias Mudzuri and Housing Minister Fidelis Mhashu. They were replaced by former Investment Minister Elton Mangoma and MDC deputy secretary general Tapiwa Mashakada, respectively.

Home Affairs co-Minister Giles Mutsekwa was replaced by Theresa Makone who was until now Public Works Minister.

Tsvangirai said the reshuffle was necessitated by the need to instil a new sense of vigour into a government whose track record has so far been overshadowed by political infighting between the MDC and Mugabe’s ZANU PF.

The MDC holds 13 of the 31 cabinet positions under a power-sharing deal with the long-ruling incumbent Mugabe.

Tsvangirai and Mugabe formed a power-sharing government last year aimed at easing tensions in the aftermath of a bloody presidential run-off election in 2008 and reviving the economy.

Under the power-sharing pact, the three parties represented in the coalition government can nominate and fire ministers seconded to serve in the regime.
