Health officials in Zimbabwe said Friday the country was on high alert for swine flu following its outbreak in neighbouring South Africa and other African countries.

Health Minister Paul Madzorera said a task force had been set up to monitor the situation and respond in case of an outbreak of the flu.

"The continued spread of the pandemic and the fact that cases have been diagnosed in Egypt and South Africa puts Zimbabwe at a real risk, hence the need for an informed population and a ready health services system," he said.

"The ministry has put in place a national task force to oversee the necessary preparedness and response required at every level of service delivery," he added.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has donated drugs and other medicines to Zimbabwe to help the country cope with swine flu in case of an outbreak.

The flu, which started in Mexico in April, has since spread to many countries and has been declared a pandemic by the WHO.
