HARARE - Leader of the smaller MDC faction Professor Welshman Ncube, has expressed regret over campaigning against the 2000 draft constitution and has again reiterated the need for a negotiated constitution.

Zimbabweans made a mistake in rejecting the 2000 draft constitution. With hindsight, MDC-N leader Professor Welshman Ncube has expressed regret for campaigning against the draft constitution which led to its rejection in a referendum held in February 2000. Professor Ncube who was addressing members of the media at the Quill Club in the capital, revealed that the MDC and its civil society partners rigorously and ignorantly campaigned against the draft constitution despite the fact that its contents were very good. The leader of the smaller MDC faction also took a swipe at Professor Lovemore Madhuku and his NCA for believing that they are the only ones with solutions to the country’s constitutional framework. However, despite Ncube’s regrets for mobilising a “No vote” in the 2000 referendum, sources in the NCA have revealed that the Lovemore Madhuku led NGO has already printed millions of “No vote” flyers ready to campaign against the new constitution. Observers say the MDC formations are now advocating for a negotiated constitution after realising that the majority views gathered in the data collecting exercise favour ZANU-PF. Analysts say the Western funded movements will go to any length to deny people’s views.
