The Zimbabwean government has challenged the auctioning of several of its properties in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
The Zimbabwean government has challenged the auctioning of several of its properties in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Harare officials are due to approach the North Gauteng High Court in a bid to prevent a German bank from letting the properties go under the hammer.
KFW Bankengruppe wants to sell off the assets to recoup money it lent the country’s government in the late 1990’s.
It said to date most of the money has not been paid back.
But an urgent court application to prevent the sale is expected.
Civil rights group AfriForum is locked in a similar court battle with the Zimbabwean government.
The organisation is representing a group of white Zimbabwean farmers who are demanding the sale of other South African properties owned by Zimbabwe.
The group’s Willie Spies said, “We are actually just at the court to observe what is happening."
He said the outcome could have an impact on their future strategy.
