Zimbabwe diamond-crime whistleblower freed on bail
HARARE, Zimbabwe — A judge in Zimbabwe has freed a human rights activist jailed for more than five weeks on allegations of passing false information on diamond-mining violations to the international diamond control body.
HARARE, Zimbabwe — A judge in Zimbabwe has freed a human rights activist jailed for more than five weeks on allegations of passing false information on diamond-mining violations to the international diamond control body.
Judge Mawadze Gurainesu on Monday granted bail to activist Farai Maguwu. The judge dismissed prosecutors' claims that Maguwu could interfere with witnesses being called for police investigations into his alleged whistleblowing activities. Maguwu allegedly leaked reports that accuse police and troops of rights violations and killings in the eastern diamond fields.
Bail had been rejected at several previous hearings.
Human rights groups protested Maguwu's detention since June 3 and said he was denied medical attention and mistreated in jail.
