TEN ZIMBABWEANS DEPORTED FROM UK

By Staff reporter and agencies   Fri, Jan 06, 2012

At least 10 Zimbabweans have been deported from the UK since the resumption of deportations in April last year, according to the Zimbabwe Association.

The association which has a growing network of groups around the UK providing practical and emotional support to Zimbabwean asylum seekers and refugees says eight Zimbabweans had been forcibly been removed to Harare and two to Malawi. It stresses that these deportations are the ones it was aware of. There could be more.

Two Zimbabweans had their deportations stopped after they successfully fought it. At present, an activist, Gladys Mabvira, is fighting deportation to Harare on January 12.

During the period, April to December the association said 23 Zimbabweans had been released from detention. However, 21 had also been detained. In November three Zimbabwean asylum seekers were detained when they went to sign in at police stations while one was picked up in December.

The association was in contact with 20 detainees, some are long-term detainees in immigration detention following prison sentences, some are disputed national cases while  others were detained recently and are not disputed nationals or ex-FNPs (Foreign National Prisoners)

One asylum seeker had voluntarily returned home.
