THERE was pandemonium in Chitungwiza on Saturday when a 77-year-old woman was found naked in a stranger’s bathroom.

The bizarre incident occurred at IN  Zengeza 5. The woman, Gogo Agnes Kusemwaenda, who appeared to be in a trance refused to put on the clothes provided at the house before being whisked to the police station.

Her stunt prompted residents to call her all sorts of names with some suspecting she was a witch.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau confirmed the incident.

“We have taken a woman found naked at a house in Zengeza for safe keeping at St Mary’s police station waiting for finer details from her relatives and the owners of the house where she was found,” said Sabau.

Gogo Agnes, who hails from Mutoko, was spotted around 5am in a bathroom by Rutendo Nyamukapa at their lodgings in Zengeza 5.

“I found her kneeling naked, as if she was praying. I was really shocked because I don’t know her and I screamed as I rushed into the house to inform my mother,” she said.

One of the tenants at the house, Marjory Manhembe said that she tried to dress her but Gogo Agnes refused.

“As people gathered here we tried to dress her but she refused saying her snake would be awakened if she dresses up.

“She said her friends had left her as she fell in the sewage drain before she found herself in their bathroom.

“She said her name is Bona and lives in Mutoko before a local pastor decided to take her to the police station after people were baying for her blood.

“What surprised us is, with her age, how she managed to travel all the way to this place,” said Marjory.

Gogo Agnes’ relatives heard about the story while on the bus to Mbare and quickly rushed to Chitungwiza.

Her concerned daughter-in-law, Juliet Shereni entered the police station and demanded to see the officer in charge.

They were only allowed to take Gogo Agnes home after the crowd had dispersed.

H-Metro tracked Juliet to their house in Seke Unit D where she openly said Gogo had come to Harare for the funeral of their aunt Jane Kambanje who was buried at Warren Hills last Thursday.

“Gogo had come from Midzi village in Mutoko to attend her aunt’s funeral before she disappeared.

“We made a police report at Makoni Police Station the same day she left.

“It was after the discussion we overheard in the bus that a witch had been found in Zengeza that we disembarked the bus to visit St Mary’s station where it was reported that she was taken to.

“Old age is catching up with her as she sometimes loses her memory,” she said.

Juliet said she was the one looking after her in Mutoko. “She is under my custody. The Bona she was mentioning is her maiden name.

“She told me that she fell in the sewage drain and she removed the clothes trying to wash them.

“I know her problem and I can’t take her for a witch, as was claimed by people,” she added.

Meanwhile, a 10-year-old girl, Tadiwanashe Rushwaya, was knocked by the car as people stampeded to catch a glimpse of the woman.

She was rushed to Manyame Park 24 Hour Medical Centre where she is receiving treatment.
