Malaysia denies Mugabe story
By Staff reporter and agencies Tue, Jan 18, 2011
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian FM, Wisma Putra has denied a foreign media report speculating that Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe is in Malaysia.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian FM, Wisma Putra has denied a foreign media report speculating that Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe is in Malaysia.
According to a Wisma Putra official, the Zimbabwe High Commission had confirmed that Mugabe was not in Malaysia.
“There is no indication that Mugabe is here for an operation,” he said yesterday.
He was asked to comment on a report in The Telegraph (a UK paper) that Mugabe, who had medical examinations while on holiday earlier this month had returned to Kuala Lumpur for an operation when his prostate suddenly flared.
The report quoted diplomatic sources in Harare and South Africa as saying that Mugabe, who will turn 87 next month, was ill and that those within his Zanu PF party were confident that he would return home within a week and recover fully.
The report stated that Mugabe, who is now in a troubled inclusive government with the Movement for Democratic Change, has had remarkable health so far.
Last month, Mugabe said he would lead his party in fresh elections later this year.
