HARARE,  — Donor organisations will soon be channelling funds to Zimbabwe through the money transfer system as a way of ensuring accountability, an official said Sunday.

Eric Chikukwa, a director of money transfer agency New Dawn, most beneficiaries of charitable organizations had shifted their preference from material donations to hard cash.

“The donations, mostly in the form of food hampers, were not always what the beneficiaries wanted as some might be in urgent need of funds to purchase medical drugs,? he said.

Chikukwa added that the new donor-driven system provided more transparency as cash sent would easily be accounted for in books that recipients signed.

“Accountability becomes easier as these are all cash=based transactions and arguments about differences in prices of food items in hampers will be a thing of the past,” he said.

He expressed optimism at the effectiveness of the new initiative adding that many international organizations were interested in implementing it.
