The body of a man who disappeared under water during a baptism ceremony near Bothaville a week ago has been found floating in the same river.

Spokeswoman Puleng Motsoeneng said a passer-by saw the body floating in the river near Khotsong and informed the police.

It was alleged that the man, Mmebe Adward Tlhapi, 24, was baptising members of his congregation at the river about a week ago. At some stage, the man went under water and ‘never come back’.

“It was further alleged that the congregation left the baptising area believing that the man was busy connecting with the ancestors.”

She said police were never informed about the disappearance.

An inquest was opened by police into the incident.
