Jonathan Moyo has been seconded to the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee (JOMIC), the grouping set up to track compliance with the 2008 Global Political Agreement for power sharing.

He’s to replace co-Minister of Home Affairs Kembo Mohadi, who is being blamed by some in his party for missing ‘too many’ of the JOMIC meetings. Douglas Mwonzora, the MDC-T spokesperson, dismissed the appointment of Moyo to JOMIC as a non event.

‘As I have said before, it is their right (ZANU PF) to be represented or misrepresented as we firmly believe in the MDC-T that Moyo would be a misrepresentation in JOMIC. Our only worry at the moment is the late co-option of this SADC team to come and work with JOMIC,’ Mwonzora said.

Other members from ZANU PF in JOMIC include politburo member Oppah Muchinguri, Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa and Transport Minister Nicholas Goche. It is believed Moyo’s appointment to JOMIC is to try and counter President Jacob Zuma’s influence in the new look JOMIC.

In June during a regional Summit, Zuma was at the forefront of asking SADC leaders to appoint three additional members to assist JOMIC in monitoring, evaluating and implementing the GPA, which guides the operations of the inclusive government.

The new members, whose terms of reference have already been drawn up by the SADC mediator, are to be drawn from South Africa, Mozambique and Zambia. Officials from the MDC formations are hoping the Troika team will be able to stop ZANU PF’s abuse of the police, CIO and soldiers to crackdown on their political opponents.

But it has now been three months since this proposal and there has been no movement on the appointment of the team, yet again prolonging the crisis in Zimbabwe.
