One of South Africa's most wanted crime suspects has been re-arrested three weeks after walking out of a court.

Zimbabwean Bongani Moyo escaped on crutches as he was due to go on trial in Pretoria for his alleged role in 35 bank robberies.

He was detained in the Johannesburg suburb of Hillbrow after a tip-off, police say.

Tight security is expected when he appears in court later. He had already fled once after being arrested in May.

Mr Moyo, allegedly a gang leader, was first detained near the border with Zimbabwe after a nationwide manhunt.

On Sunday night, he was found travelling in a vehicle with two other Zimbabweans, said police Brigadier Neville Malila.

Two judicial officers and two policemen have been suspended over his escape from a Pretoria courtroom earlier this month.

He had not been locked up and was not wearing shackles.

He walked out of court with members of the public.
