Luanda - The Southern Africa Development Community  (SADC) said it will soon prepare a mission of the organ's president to intercede with western countries to re-analyse and possibly relieve the sanction imposed on Zimbabwe.

The information was released Wednesday to the press in Luanda by the secretary of State of Foreign Affairs, George Chikoti.

According to George Chikoti, the initiative emerged from the 30th Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government on Tuesday, August 17, in Namibia.

The Summit concluded that the referred sanctions have a negative impact on the populations and countries of the region.

“The economy of Zimbabwe was very dynamic and greatly influenced some countries of the region. These sanctions hit negatively the local production. This is why SADC wants to intervene in order to change the situation”, stressed the Foreign Affairs official.

The Angolan delegation to the Summit was headed by the vice president, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, who represented the head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos.

Among other aspects, the event noticed a continued consolidation of democracy, peace and security in the region, and reaffirmed the commitment to establishing  the customs union in the region.

The group decided to set up a liaison office to facilitate dialogue towards the resolution of the crisis in Madagascar and maintain the sanctions imposed on it.

The forum appealed to the international community to lift the sanctions against Zimbabwe as there is no more reason for their application due to their negative impact on the country and the region.

SADC was created on August 17, 1992, during a summit of Heads of State and Government of the region held in Windhoek, Namibia.
