Commissioners to be interviewed today

By Zimonline   Mon, Aug 03, 2009

HARARE – Zimbabwe’s House of Assembly is today set to hold public interviews on prospective candidates to head various commissions set up in line with the Global Political Agreement (GPA) between the country’s political parties, an official said on Friday.

"Parliament will be holding public interviews on Monday next week," a senior parliamentarian told ZimOnline speaking on condition that his name was not published.

The candidates will head commissions such as the Zimbabwe Media Commission, replacing the Media and Information Commission; the Electoral Commission, which replaces the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission; and the Human Rights Commission among others.

The commissioners are as result of the inter party talks between President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU PF and the two Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) formations led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Deputy Premier Arthur Mutambara.

The parties signed a power-sharing agreement on September 15 last year, which led to the formation of a unity government in February mandated to stabilise the country’s economy and institute political reforms to enhance democracy.

"Unless there is a change of plan, the interviews will be held in an open forum. Although I do not have the names of the candidates at the moment the interviews will be held on Monday," the parliamentarian said. – ZimOnline
