Harare.  A Zimbabwe's mobile tele-density rate has declined by 17.8 percent from 8.4 million subscribers in February to 6 million in April.

This has been attributed to the mobile sim card registration exercise which has seen defaulters disconnected.

Latest statistics from the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) show that in overall tele-density, the number of telephone lines- including landline users- for every 100 people fell from 67.5 percent to 49.7 percent.

The largest mobile phone provider, Econet, lost 1.4 million subscribers, NetOne lost 300,000 subscribers while Telecel' s subscriber base fell by 692,000 as a result of failure by subscribers to register their sim cards.

Potraz Deputy Director General, Alfred Marisa, said the regulatory authority had done its best to allow users register before the extended deadline in February.
