Chidzambwa Ready to Quit
SUNDAY Chidzambwa has dropped the biggest hint that he is ready to quit the Warriors' coaching post, if he gets a good offer as he revealed the depth of his unhappiness holding local football's top job. SUNDAY Chidzambwa has dropped the biggest hint that he is ready to quit the Warriors' coaching post, if he gets a good offer as he revealed the depth of his unhappiness holding local football's top job. Chidzambwa, a perennial cagey character opened up in an interview at Rufaro last Thursday saying if he gets a good offer he will pack his bags.
The chances are however slim that any nation is interested in Chidzambwa's services judging by the unattractive football played by the Warriors at the moment.
"If I get a good offer I will definitely go," Chidzambwa said.
The senior national team's preparations for the CHAN qualifiers were the worst under the sun, as the players had to commute from home.
We monitored the Warriors training sessions for four days and discovered that the team is tactically inferior and spent most of their time in camp doing one work out after the other shedding buckets of sweat.
The Warriors have no playing culture. The Dutch play total football, even if they don a Dynamos kit and abandon their famous orange kit one would still identify the team's playing style. The Brazilians play Samba. The Italians have a boring but extremely defensive rigour and tactical savvy football.
But the Warriors play is potpourri. The baby-faced Tafadzwa Rusike is a brilliant player, but still plays the CAPS United way with the Warriors and so does striker Nyasha Mushekwi. Rusike still holds on to the ball for too long despite his small frame and needs a coach to dissuade him from that.
Daniel Veremu is a good defender and is still as raw as they come and typifies the tall primary school fullback -- unnecessarily booting away the ball.
Zephaniah Ngodzo has been reduced to a scarecrow on the right wing yet he should be overlapping like the modern day right back.
George Karimupfumbi is an exciting left back at CAPS United, who has also been reduced to a stool pigeon at the Warriors and rarely ventures upfront.
Warriors captain Method Mwanjali has an identity crisis -- is he a midfielder or defender? And this is what Chidzambwa should unlock out of the player.
Chidzambwa has built a laager mentality in the national team. The team has no consistence and changes at the drop of the hat. The Warriors' international cap is one of the easiest to be earned in the world.
The Warriors used a 4-4-2 formation against the bridesmaid of continental football, Swaziland but the coaching department says they still yearn for a creative midfielder. A good coach should identify a creative playmaker in the premiership.
Chidzambwa seems to have dumped his favoured 3-5-2 formation and we asked him about this.
"We have not dumped the formations but we change formation according to the opposition," Chidzambwa said.
Chidzambwa said he has happy with the current Warriors squad and would make a few additions for the 2012 Nations Cup qualifiers.
"We are building a base for the Nations Cup qualifiers. We just need a few foreign-based players to fuse with the local players," he said.
But will the Zimbabwe Warriors stand a chance in Group A against the likes of Mali, Liberia and Cape Verde. The senior national team will start their campaign in the 2012 Nations Cup qualifier with an away tie against Liberia on September 5 before engaging Cape Verde in the home fixture on November 9.
"Mali are the big guns in the group. Any team in the group is strong enough to qualify. We will take each game as it comes," Chidzambwa said.
The coach is however not happy with the preparations of the Warriors in the CHAN tournament.
"The conditions are never the same. You can never get what you want," Chidzambwa said.
There is a strange pattern in the Warriors' selection. Players who turn out for Dynamos or being linked with DeMbare have a better chance of being called to the senior national team than those from other teams.
Ashley Rambanapasi was a fringe player for the Warriors until he moved to DeMbare. Ngodzo has been on the shopping list for Dynamos and suddenly became popular with the national team coach.
Dynamos' goalkeeper Washington Arubi continues to be called ahead of goalkeepers such as Tafadzwa Dube.
The CHAN is a tournament for domestic players and surely Gunners gunslinger Norman Maroto is not that bad and should have got a jersey.
Despite being owed allowances and bonuses Chidzambwa still perseveres as the national team coach, but still enjoys his Zifa issued KB Isuzu with no number plates.
As Chidzambwa hints at jumping ship, in the picture comes Norman Mapeza. The former Monomotapa coach was on the bench against Swaziland last Sunday. The young coach looks the possible successor for Chidzambwa.
Despite not being available at the weeklong training camp, Mapeza was available for the match and his body language on the bench was confirmation that he is the Warriors coach in waiting.
Is Chidzambwa playing "surrogate mother"? Time will tell.
