Harare, Zimbabwe - Zimbabwe said Monday it would carry out a population census in the country beginning this year to 2012. In a statement, a government statistics agency said the exercise would also be used to gather other socio-economic information in the country.

The last population census in Zimbabwe was carried out in 2002, and put the country's population at 12.5 million.

An estimated three million people have since fled the country due to political and economic instability, most of them to neighbouring South Africa.

The Central Statistical Office said it would begin the census this month with a listing of all households and collection of other information till 2012.

''Mapping and listing of households will begin in mid-May 2010 and continue for the next two years. The mapping exercise is a pre-enumeration activity that is envisaged to last about two years,'' it said.

The government and aid agencies are financing the exercise.
